We want you to take 30 seconds to watch some of this video by 2008 Pitchfork-approved “it band” Vampire Weekend.
I’m sure the weekend vampires are all nice chaps, polite to a fault, and respectful of everyone they meet. And that, to me, represents everything wrong with their music. It’s so damned polite, so academy-approved, that it makes my stomach ache. Now, for the antidote:
Some thoughtful person captured TAD in its heyday, bulldozing their way through “Daisy.” We’ve mentioned here in the past that the attribute that we most miss with today’s Hot Young Bands is menace, and although the members of TAD were all apparently friendly to a fault, they packed their music full of menace. How we miss TAD!
Anyway, we’re going to keep this post short, because we’ve been slacking on the posts and because Tom is heading out to
(1) The “Wood Goblins” single. “Wood Goblins” and “Cooking With Gas” date from the Salt Lick era (1989); both were recorded by Steve Albini. “Cooking” also appeared as b-side to “Loser.” “Daisy” dates back to the period when TAD-the-band was simply Tad-the-man. We also posted “Daisy” years ago here.
God damn, this record turned 20 years old this year.
(2) The “Jack Pepsi” single. This record resulted in one of TAD’s many legal troubles, as the Pepsi Corporation didn’t cotton to seeing its logo appropriated for something that rocks this hard. “Jack Pepsi” ranks high in our grunge canon—we definitely put it in the top ten. The b-sides, “Pig Iron” and “Eddie Hook,” come from expanded version of the single. Both rock.
Jack Pepsi
. . . and the zip file for this EP is here.
Sorry to keep this so brief, but we’re busy, busy men. We’re planning to follow this up with a piece about some of pre-TAD bands featuring TAD members, so stay tuned!

Great work - love Tad - actually saw Vampire Weekend support Blur at Hyde Park (London) on friday 3rd July - they were ok in a "polite" unaffable "Strokes" way but they were sincere and not "manufactured" or pandering to the crowd, so for that i like 'em. But yeah, miss TAD!!
Cheers, Keep up the good work - Emile
Woo hoo! Someone else who appreciates the awesomeness of TAD! I interviewed Mr. Doyle a few months back. Check it out at:

Awesome interview! Thanks for posting the link.
second that! good work - cheers, Emile
Thanks. Took a while to get around to Tad (i.e. until like right now) despite being a Mudhoney/Melvins fan for a good fifteen years. Reading Greg Prato's new book, *Grunge Is Dead*, so I decided to bone up on some of these guys.
The book, incidentally, is pretty interesting. It's an oral history, modeled on *Please Kill Me*. There's very little in the way of editorial intrusion, which is good, because when it's there it's not particularly good. For example, in chapter introductions he continually uses the word and concept "grunge" uncritically, despite quoting everyone involved as being utterly contemptuous toward the term. There are some weird factual errors, too, like a point where he quotes someone (I've forgotten who and there's no index) on how important "that Scratch Acid record" was; the editorial citation then refers the reader to "1991's *The Greatest Gift*," which makes no sense as the time he's discussing is like 1986. But if you leave Prato's efforts out of it (& even the arrangement of the quotes is strange), there are some illuminating anecdotes from all kinds of folks throughout the book. I'd recommend it for readers of this blog.
Thanks for your comments, 1009. At least whatever Scratch Acid record that was meant was included on The Greatest Gift, although you're right about the mistake.
While I can understand why those bands didn't want to be pigeon-holed as "grunge" bands, I also rather like the term, at least in its original iteration. It's an accurate description of how, say, Bleach sounded. But for Stone Temple Pilots? No.
Thanks for the recommendation. I've been meaning to check that book out.
Sweet video dude. I agree wholeheartedly and I have to point out that Youtube is awesome because there's so much on there that I would never have seen otherwise.
Nice to see you posting again too.
PS could you re upload the very early EP with "Daisy" and "RITual Device" on it that you linked on this page?

Interesting that you'd post the Tad, Big Chief, Helltrout flyer- Tad's new band Brothers of the Sonic Cloth is putting out a split 10" with Seattle's Mico de Noche- which features 2 ex-Helltrout dudes. Should be out in Oct. Coincidence, or FATE?!?!?
Perhaps not the correct place to request it, but, your post of Tuesday, October 10, 2006 -
"An Earth Post That Barely Mentions Kurt Cobain"
Earth – Live at the X-Ray Café
If you have it, would you consider re-posting this in lossless quality?
Hopeful thanks.

Fantastic TAD vs. VW blog! We all know who would win that fight...
Ironic post since I've been rocking my TAD 7-inches lately...
Hey, Lamestain - would you ever do post on The Pudz? "(Take Me To) your Leader" is one of my favorite songs ever, but I know nothing else about them, and have never even heard another one of their songs! I've heard some of The Squirrels stuff and I've talked to Rob Morgan about the band a bit on myspace. Would love to get a full story on the band.
Keep up the great work!
Hey Guys - majorly fu ked off as lost my Mr Epp stuff - i know it's lame and whiney but any chance you could re-up the Mr Epp stuff - would really appreciate it? Off to see mudhoney (again) next week - will let you know how that works out!! Also seeing Alice In Chains but, er. hmm - not so much - Have to say Pearl Jam at Shepherds Bush were amazing - at the O2 (55,0000 people)_not so much! all good - keep it up and thanks, Emile
Hi,
eons ago I saw Tad in Austin and really enjoyed this vid. took me back. I'm trying to track down a video clip for a doc I'm making that includes a brief chronology of the early 90s indie rock era and would love it if someone could write me. If you have time to discuss offline, I'm at kerthyfix@yahoo.com
I'm looking for fan video owned by a band that was regional or lesser known than a Nirvana or Soundgarden. But that evokes the era.
Thanks for any help,
kerthy
REQUEST - "Rat City" lp by THE STATICS, if you have it.
I have a question for you to mull over until your return.
Where are the FEAST tapes??? Apparently they recorded material for a single and an EP, yet it has never surfaced. Someone has it!
think, if you ever come back, you could post the Hype! 7" box set?
Hi Lamestain,
Would it be possible to repost the Jack Pepsi EP in mp3 (and maybe ritual device too?) Thanks, and score on your blog. catch ya on the flippity-flop
